HOLIDAY HOURS

Are Schools Open Today?

School calendars are local. A federal holiday can be a closure in one district and a regular or remote-learning day in another.

Short answer

There is no single nationwide U.S. school-closure calendar. Public-school calendars are normally set by states, districts or individual school systems, while private schools and colleges publish their own schedules.

Federal holiday does not always mean school closed

Many districts close for major federal holidays, but the exact list varies. A district may also close for teacher workdays, local observances, election operations, weather or seasonal breaks that are not federal holidays.

Fastest way to check

  1. Open your school district’s official website.
  2. Find the current school-year calendar, not a general events calendar.
  3. Look for notes such as “schools closed,” “students not in attendance,” “remote instruction” or “early dismissal.”
  4. Check alerts on the morning of travel when weather or emergencies are possible.

Why a city calendar cannot answer for everyone

Even nearby districts can schedule different teacher-development days and breaks. For example, New York City publishes its own 2026–27 calendar with district-specific closure, remote-learning and early-dismissal entries. It should not be used for another district.

Colleges and child care

Universities use academic calendars that can differ from K–12 schedules. Child-care centers and after-school programs may remain open when schools close—or close on additional days—so verify them separately.

Which calendar should you trust?

Use the calendar for the current school year and the exact institution. A state education page may establish minimum instructional requirements without publishing each district’s closure dates. District calendars can also change after makeup days, weather emergencies or labor agreements.

For same-day status, check the district alert banner, automated message system and transportation notice. Athletic events, after-school care and meal programs may operate differently from classroom instruction.

Where to verify

Start with your district or school website. The U.S. Department of Education provides school and district resources, while local systems publish the authoritative operating calendar. See the NYC Public Schools calendar as an example of a local calendar.
